There are many new faces arriving this summer to the CLPB, however there are some notable returning players to watch for. One of those players to watch is a dynamic centerfielder hailing from San Augustin, Florida who will suit up for the North Palm Beach Flamingos, Jared Whittle. Whittle currently plays center for the Rams of the University of Mobile in Alabama. I was able to talk with Jared and learn more about his baseball background and his goals for the upcoming summer season.
I see you have played for multiple teams. Where did you start your college career and how did you end up in Alabama?
Whittle: Well, I started out my career at a Division 2 school up in South Carolina called Coker University, then I transferred to Palm Beach State College, and this past year I was at Mobile. I had a good season, hit about .417, and led the team in hitting, but it wasn’t a great fit for me. This year I’m on the lookout for a different place to play for this coming year.
Do you have a favorite team and player to watch?
Whittle: My favorite team would definitely be the Marlins and the Rays. I’m a Florida guy. For my favorite player, I would say probably Kevin Kiermaier, the center fielder for the Rays. I just love how he plays the game. He gives 100% all the time, nothing but heart, and I just always looked at him like that in my game.
This will be your second year with the CLPB. Do you have any goals, and what are you most looking forward to this summer?
Whittle: As far as goals, you know, honestly just go out there, have some fun and steal a bunch of bases. I’m looking forward to having a fun time.
That’s great. How did you find out about this opportunity to compete in the CLPB?
Whittle: Well, I was looking for some leagues in Florida so I was just looking around my area and seeing what’s in Florida, and after doing some digging I found the CLPB, and it looked like a really good opportunity, and I gave it a shot last year and I really enjoyed it.
That’s awesome. Now, you mentioned earlier and the scouting report shows you pride yourself on your speed. What other tools or attributes are you planning to work on this summer?
Definitely my speed and base stealing. Other than that, I also want to refine my hitting, specifically directional hitting, and just be able to hit the pitch exactly where I want it.
That’s definitely important. Last thing, name your favorite baseball movie.
I gotta go with Bull Durham.
