Grant Gilooly may be one of the youngest members of the Vipers, but he is one of the team’s brightest stars. Gilooly the Vipers third baseman is batting .250, recording 10 hits, including three doubles and one triple, 5 RBIs, scoring 19 runs.

Gilooly has also been disciplined at the plate walking 13 times and has stolen 15 bases, the third highest total on the team.

Gilooly will be starting his collegiate baseball career at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, in the fall but does have a shot to get picked in the 2022 MLB Draft. Gilooly is the No. 299 ranked prospect coming out of high school and got to attend a prestigious MLB Draft combine event in Louisiana a couple of weeks ago.

Our Judith Altneu talked to Gilooly about his time at the Future Star Series Pre-Draft Combine, getting ready for college and his summer season with the Vipers.

What was your favorite part about the Future Star Series Pre-Draft Combine?

“My favorite thing about the pre-draft event was the competition. We played two games and I faced some serious velocity and was able to compete. The atmosphere was extremely competitive, and I tend to rise in those situations.”

Who was the coolest person you met at the Future Star Series event?

“We got to face someone throwing 99 [mph] which was pretty cool… competition there. I didn’t really face anything under 92 [mph] which was nice but did hit a couple of barrels.”

How likely do you think you would get drafted?

“I like to think there’s a good possibility, probably late rounds if anything, I probably still go to college but it’s nice to know that I have a shot.”

How do you think the Vipers and CLPB will help you prepare for your first college baseball season?

“I’m excited. In high school, I got to face a lot of fast balls because that didn’t throw many good curveballs or changes. I’m facing some good pitchers here which is really preparing me for my first season in college coming in the spring. I’ve got some good teammates that are guiding me pretty well. Obviously Dale [Francis], Will [Owens], and Tariq Bacon.”

What do you like to do outside of baseball?

“I love to fish, love hanging out with family and watch movies.”

How excited are you to go to college and play baseball?

“I got some family up there. Got Jay got Marcos I on my team I played in high school with. I got a couple of friends from school that are just going there for school, so I feel comfortable out there and I’m excited to meet my teammates and get rolling.”

What more do you want to accomplish over the last month of the season?

“I’ve seen enough off speed [pitches] and I just need to start getting some barrels and hopefully that skyrockets me on the batting average side.”
