The Wellington Colts is not just a member of the CLPB, but also has youth travel baseball teams for kids ages 8-14 in the Wellington, Florida area which Colts head coach Chad Mills founded 12 years ago.
Besides serving as the head coach of the Colts collegiate team Mills is the Director of Operations which puts him in charge of hiring coaches and managing everything needed to run a travel team.
The Colts collegiate team will have a few players who played on Colts travel teams when they were younger.
“We like to obviously support the kids that played through our program that are going on to college or in college,” Mills said. “But I also love getting to meet some of the other guys from other states that are at different schools.”
Mills grew up in Chicago before moving to Florida to play baseball for Eckerd College where he played shortstop.
Before starting his coaching career, Mills worked for sports apparel companies in the sales department with custom apparel. Mills sold Champion and Under Armour gear to Florida professional sport teams to sell in their gift shop.
Mills got his start in coaching by coaching his kids, but had always known he wanted to be a coach.
“Whether it’s baseball, basketball, football, soccer it was always a passion of mine and I always wanted to be kind of around a game,” Mills said. “That’s kind of what drove me to want to continue, if I couldn’t play to become a coach [instead].”
Currently, Mills is in his seventh season as the varsity baseball coach at Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida and is looking forward to the Colts third season with the CLPB.
“My goal [for this summer] is to get a group of kids that are going to be competitive,” Mills said. “We’re going to get those kids they need to get in to be ready to go back to college for the fall and be ready for the next collegiate season.”
